FAQ – Outremer catamarans
Find here a non-exhaustive list of frequently asked questions such as what is the price of an Outremer catamaran, why go for a catamaran with daggerboards and more, to help you better refine your needs and understand the processes in place at Outremer.
Life expectancy of an Outremer
Thanks to our expertise as a blue water catamaran builder since 1984, our manufacturing methods mean that Outremer catamarans are designed to last over time. The Outremer shipyard is very proud that the very first multihulls built over 35 years ago are still sailing the world without having seen the exceptional rigidity of their structure diminish. We design our boats for a minimum lifespan of 50 years. See you in a few years to prove it!
Are you looking for energy self-sufficiency on board?
This is our thing! Our catamaran models, depending on the chosen configuration, are designed to be completely energy self-sufficient during your sailing journey. The installation of a large capacity of solar panels, a water generator and energy monitoring will allow you to live in complete energy autonomy, both at anchor and while sailing, including the use of a watermaker, washing machine, freezer... On the other hand, if you want to sail with air conditioning running 24 hours a day, you will still need a generator.
How much does an Outremer catamaran cost?
Depending on the level of finish and options chosen: - Outremer 45: From 850 to 920k euros ex-tax -Outremer 4X: From 1M to 1.2M euros exc-tax - Outremer 51: second hand only - Outremer 52: From 1.45 to 1.75M euros exc-tax - Outremer 55: From 1.8M to 2.2M€ euros exc-tax
How much does it cost to live on a catamaran?
Living costs on a catamaran depend not only on the number of crew members, but also the age, size, and condition of the cruising boat and destination. The budget to live onboard a cat ranges from 500-2,000 $ for a couple and 2,000-5,000 $ per month for a family of four.
Why not offer a 100% electric model to the general public?
At Outremer we often talk about the "margin of safety". This is something we do not compromise on. The Outremer 4.zero now has a proven electric propulsion solution! The new electric catamaran model was officially launched after extensive testing at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2021. See the model page for more information...
Do you have to pay the whole price for your Outremer catamaran on signing the manufacturing contract or on delivery?
Payment for the boat is made in various stages: 20% at contract signature, 20% 14 months before delivery, 30% at bridging, 30% at delivery
What is the resale value of an Outremer catamaran?
Because of their rarity on the market and their construction qualities, Outremers retain a particularly high resale value on the secondhand catamaran market. Difficult to predict the future, but by experience, our owners realize that in total cost (purchase - resale) buying an Outremer costs much less than a mass production boat which will see a much greater reduction in value and resell at a lower price than an Outremer catamaran.
What are the different stages in buying an Outremer catamaran?
If you are thinking of buying an Outremer, please do not hesitate to contact us to arrange a meeting with our team. Beyond the exchanges on your particular project, it is also an opportunity to show you our manufacturing methods and to organize a sea trial if necessary. If this has convinced you, we can, if you wish, draw up and sign a construction contract for your future boat. Our doors remain open to you throughout the construction process of your boat so that you can follow its progress. And if you can't make it, don't worry, we will send you pictures every week during the build!
How can I finance my new purchase?
Several options are available for the financing of your catamaran depending on your country of origin and your financial situation. You can of course buy the boat with a one-off payment. However, if you are a Western European resident, you may be eligible for the French leasing system. This allows you, after payment of a deposit, to pay for the boat in rental payments ranging from 3 to 15 years, while reducing VAT. Do not hesitate to contact us if you would like more information on how to buy your sailing catamaran.
Choice of equipment on board
All the items of equipment offered on board Outremer sailboats are proven solutions, simple, and easy to maintain so that wherever you are in the world – whether in the Mediterranean Sea or in the Bahamas, the maintenance of your boat does not prevent you from enjoying your stopover. We survey our catamaran owners every year, in order to collect the stories of their experiences on board, and to have confirmation of the reliability of our solutions. No hesitation, if a solution is not reliable enough, we find safer ones!
Why should I choose a high-performance catamaran?
Comfort at sea, speed, safety, safety, safety, safety, safety…
Why go for a catamaran with daggerboards?
If cruising speed can be an important decision factor when buying a catamaran, the upwind capability is often neglected, even though it is essential! Nobody wants to sail hard on the wind for long, so it is crucial to be able to limit these moments with an efficient upwind boat! On a long trip, around the world for example, it is also important to be able to go upwind to escape from a danger (geographical, meteorological, or other), but also to open up new sailing areas.
Why would I prefer a multihull to a monohull?
For the quality of life on board first of all, it’s difficult to go back to a monohull after having tasted life on a catamaran. Of course, on a liveaboard catamaran, you stay "flat", without the heeling over while sailing or the roll at anchor, but above all you live "on one level", with a view of the whole horizon, even while cooking, reading in the saloon or during meals. But the speed of an Outremer shortens the distances, which can open new horizons (only 10 to 15 days for an Atlantic crossing!), or can allow day-sailing only between distant islands, or to avoid bad weather by going around it...
Do I have to be an experienced sailor to buy an Outremer?
The dream of blue water sailing on an Outremer catamaran is within everyone's reach! Because of its light displacement, handling an Outremer is even easier than any other large production catamaran. Moreover, when you purchase a new Outremer, we make it a point of honor to train you until you have reached the level of knowledge necessary to sail with confidence at sea, through our multiple seminars with experienced sailors and our catamaran training academy. A wide range of training courses will be offered to you on topics related to blue water cruising: maneuvers, mechanics, electricity, electronics, maintenance, weather, safety, and medical, among others!
Performance or comfort, do I have to choose?
First of all, you have to define what you mean by "comfort". For some people, comfort on an ocean-going catamaran means above all the living space and optional equipment such as a dishwasher, heating, air conditioning, a generator, etc. It must be understood that the combined weight of these elements can be significant and will impact the level of performance and even...reduce your comfort at sea, since the amplitude of pitching will increase, as will your use of the engines. In fact, it is the hull (the underwater volume) that carries the total weight of the boat. If this volume is distributed over a limited length (low waterline length), then the hulls will have to be wider, which of course brings more interior space in the cabins, but greatly increases the resistance to forward movement. Less performance of course, but also decreasing the ability to go upwind, and requiring more powerful engines, thus increasing weight and effort, etc... At Outremer, we prefer to increase the load capacity by lengthening the boat! This way, you can take along a generator, a powerful air conditioning system, a tumble dryer... while keeping gentle movements even in rough seas, and a very good level of performance!
Should I go for a new or second-hand catamaran?
It all depends on your timing. If your cruising project is planned to start in the next few months, a second-hand boat can be a very good opportunity given the time it takes to build a new boat. If you have planned a departure at a later date (two to three years), buying a new catamaran will allow you to benefit from the latest improvements from the shipyard, to train yourself thanks to the shipyard's services and above all to configure the boat according to your own needs! Outremer second-hand catamarans hold a very good price, the price differential remains very limited.
