June 1984, La Grande Motte in the South of France: Gérard Danson, a young naval architect with the Conati yard, working with of the yard’s best technician, Daniel Cailloux, set about the construction of a performance and seaworthy 40 foot catamaran, aimed at long-distance cruising. Designer and visionary creator, Gérard Danson, understands that lightness, fine hulls and reduced windage are the key elements which guarantee the marine qualities of a multihull.

A second boat was put into production before the first one was launched: the enthusiasm led to new people joining in the adventure… A name had to be found for this little enterprise, and a business had to be registered. Fans of the sea and of cruising, and committed to quality workmanship, the partners agreed on a name: the Outremer yard was born!

Built to order, to best suit the needs of their owners, open cockpit, small or large coachroofs, outboard motors or inboard, the first boats monopolized the podiums of the racing world, where they participated and quickly crossed the oceans.

The challenge was a success: a new 50 foot model was designed to offer even more comfort and living space. New buildings allowed for an increase in production capacity, the teams expanded and a specialist design team was put in place. Outremer catamarans were sailing all the seas of the world and winning races and rallies: the Transat des Alizés, the Transat des Passionnés, the Transmed, the ARC…

The first Outremer 45, Bagnoles de l’Orne, won the prestigious OSTAR in the hands of Didier Levillain. Many families have discovered that catamarans make a safe and seaworthy boat for a sabbatical year around the Atlantic or for a circumnavigation.

Gérard Danson passed away in 2005 and this marked the end of an era. But in 2007, there was a new beginning, with the arrival of Grand Large Yachting! Grasping the synergy of blue water cruising, and holding the same fundamental values which forged Outremer’s DNA, the GLY group relaunched production and committed to working with the best multihull naval architects.

The Outremer 49 marked this renaissance: benefiting from progressions in technology (complete infusion of the structure) and evolutions in naval architecture (dynamic balancing of hulls, flush-decked areas, 360° visibility…), Outremer renewed the concept of a blue water cruising catamaran. All this, while maintaining the sea-keeping qualities which built the Outremer legend and bringing the expertise of a world leader in long distance cruising on all the oceans, to even further improve the quality of life on board and the reliability of the boats.

Committed to a long-term vision of customer service, Grand Large Yachting and of the millions of miles covered by their boats guarantee indispensable peace of mind for cruising.

Many awards attest to this progress: ” best European boat” for the Outremer 49, 5X and 4X, “boat of the year” in the USA, BPI excellence in innovation, Pass French Tech, which awards the best-performing small to medium-sized businesses… The yard’s reputation extends around the world, with a presence in fifteen countries, exporting 70% of its production: Outremers have become the undisputed benchmark of blue water sailing!
